Resources for Parents

Resources for Parents

At Calhoun Community College, we recognize the vital role parents and guardians play in supporting their students’ educational journey. This page consolidates key resources to help you stay informed and engaged.

Understanding Student Privacy: FERPA

The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) protects the privacy of student education records. Under FERPA, the college cannot discuss confidential information related to grades or disabilities with parents without explicit permission from the student. Under FERPA, students have the right to:
  • Review their education records
  • Request amendments to inaccurate information
  • Provide consent for disclosure of records

Helping Your Child Apply to Calhoun

One of the best ways to support your child’s transition to college is by encouraging independence. We recommend parents serve as guides and cheerleaders—offering advice, reminders, and encouragement—while allowing students to take ownership of the application process themselves. This builds confidence and helps prepare them for the responsibility that comes with college success.

To help you stay informed and ready to offer the right support, we’ve gathered links to key admissions resources:

What to Do After Your Student is Accepted?

Encourage your student to keep track of deadlines, complete forms accurately, and reach out to Calhoun advisors with questions. They’ll be supported every step of the way—and so will you.

Financial Aid and Payment Information

Understanding the financial aspects of college is crucial. Our Financial Aid office assists students in navigating scholarships, grants, and loans.

Supporting Students with Disabilities

Our Center for Student Disability, Counseling, & Support Services offers accommodations and support for students with documented disabilities. Parents can be involved by:
  • Encouraging self-advocacy skills in their students
  • Understanding the differences between high school and college accommodations
  • Reviewing the Parent Resources for guidance
